Cultural Activities

MSCA always uphold the cultural diversity of Kerala, from where the group hails. We have various cultural activities for Onam, Christmas etc. Onam is widely celebrated all over the world where malayalees reside. In Australia we have various onam celebrations by different cultural groups and associations. We normally celebrate onam in the month of September, Onam is the biggest and the most important festival celebrated in the state of Kerala, India. It is a festival of harvest and is celebrated with joy and enthusiasm all over the world by people who hail from Kerala.

According to a popular legend, the festival is celebrated to welcome King Mahabali, whose spirit is said to visit Kerala at the time of Onam. Onam is celebrated with various cultural activities like folk songs, elegant dances, energetic games, Chendamelam and Pookkalam (flowers). MSCA takes this opportunity to encourage all members more importance given to junior members to participate and get a spirit of Onam.

MSCA organises Bollywood / Hip Hop Dance class for all ages on Fridays 7.30 pm to 9.30 pm

Chendamelam Troup (Book now)

A Chenda is a drum- cylindrical shaped Wood, It’s both ends are covered with animal Skin. It has a length of two feet and a foot diameter of one foot.

For better sound and clarity, the animal skin used is usually of a cow, specially abdomen skin. This instrument is famous for its loud and rigid sound. MSCA is equipped with 10 Chenda and 4 Ilathalam which we use for our Shimgarimelam.

We perform all over Melbrourne for cultural shows of various clubs and other activities. We have regular chenda class and practice every Saturday.
